Emergencies
In the case of an emergency, please call 112 right away!
This is the Icelandic (and pan-European) equivalent to 911 or 999.
You can also contact the emergency services on their website, in a number of languages, here.
Weather
It's important to stay up to date on the latest weather reports, to make sure the trip you had planned on making is safe to make.
This is especially important during the winter months, when storms can sweep the country and make parts of it, and certain roads unsafe to drive.
You can follow along with the weather reports in English, here.
Road conditions/closings
The government agency in charge of building and maintaining our roads is Vegagerðin (literal translation: The Road Makery).
Vegagerðin have a great website, where they show the conditions of all main roads (and some mountain roads) and whether or not those are traversable. They also host a number of live webcams on their website, which show you what the conditions of the roads are.
You can find their website here.
Safetravel
We recommend checking out the Staysafe website, and downloading their app.
Make sure to check for weather, earthquake, and volcano warnings through the website and app.
You can access their website here.
You can also check to see if there is a volcano erupting at any given moment, here.
Quick Icelandic lesson: "Nei" means "No", and "Já" means "Yes".
And, finally, you can always reach out to us directly to ask us anything related to driving conditions and safety!
Stay safe out there!
