Road conditions

Are the roads safe to drive all year round? What type of car do I need for each season?

Main roads

Main roads refers to the main highways of Iceland. While the majority of these roads are paved, there are still places where a main road might be gravel. It is fine to drive those, but please be careful, and keep a safe distance from the car in front to avoid rocks getting thrown onto your car.

If a road is open, and deemed safe to drive, then it is safe to drive for all sizes of cars.

That being said, of course a larger 4x4 is less likely to get stuck somewhere in the snow in winter, but the small one is easier to push unstuck if it ever does get stuck!

F roads, mountain roads, off-road, river crossings

None of our cars are intended for F roads, mountain roads/paths, river crossings, or off-road driving (which is also illegal). If you are caught driving on those roads, or crossing a river, any damage caused to the car resulting from it will not be covered by your insurance.

You can read more about that here.

Closed roads

In certain conditions, police might deem it safest to close the road for traffic. Please obey these closings and do not attempt to drive past.

These closings apply to all makes and sizes of vehicles.

In certain cases, police might only allow especially outfitted and modified 4x4 vehicles through a road. None of the cars supplied by Viking Wheels are meant for these conditions.

Big or small car?

Road closings apply to all cars offered by Viking Wheels. A larger vehicle will not get you past those.

All vehicles offered by Viking Wheels are meant for the same roads and conditions.

That being said, there are definitely situations where you might be better served by a larger 4x4 option, than a more compact, front-wheel-drive vehicle.

These restrictions and conditions only apply in the winter time, or when there is snow or ice on the roads.

During the summer and autumn, you are just as well served by a smaller vehicle as a larger one, in terms of road conditions and safety.
