Seasonality

You might have heard that Iceland can sometimes have some bad weather. Is it dangerous to drive in Iceland during bad weather?

When talking about seasonality, we find it best to just talk about two seasons; summer and winter.

Summer

From May all the way through to the end of October, you should not expect to find ice or snow on the roads in and around Reykjavík. While there might still be snow in the north of the island in May, or start to snow in October, this is very unusual for the south-west corner (where Reykjavík is).

You can expect it to rain quite a bit during much of this time, especially in the spring and autumn parts of this period.

Generally, road conditions are good, although slippery when raining. But in terms of access, there is nowhere you shouldn't expect to be able to get to (except for mountain roads, of course).

You can read more about general road conditions, here.

Winter

Starting in November, and finishing in late April, this is the time of year where you can expect to have snow and ice on the roads.

This obviously makes the driving more dangerous, so please drive carefully!

During this period, our cars are equipped with studded tires to give you the best possible grip and control over your vehicle.

Certain roads might be closed during periods of heavy snowfall. If they are, then they will be closed to all types of vehicles!

The police sometimes make exceptions for specially equipped and modified 4x4 vehicles. This exception does not apply to any vehicle offered by Viking Wheels.

You can see more about that here

Otherwise, if a road is open, and deemed safe to travel through, you can safely drive it. Just be respectful of the conditions around you and drive accordingly.
